Psychiatry is a medical specialty dedicated to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Consultations are carried out by medical psychiatrists and involve a detailed evaluation of symptoms, clinical history, family context, and their impact on daily life.
Psychiatric care may include:
Prescription and adjustment of medication, when clinically indicated
Coordination with psychotherapy, whenever necessary
Ongoing assessment of treatment response and overall well-being
In some cases, additional tests may be requested to support diagnosis and define the most appropriate treatment plan.
The goal is to effectively treat identified clinical conditions, promote emotional stability, improve daily functioning, and enhance quality of life.

Psychiatry may be particularly helpful when:
Emotional or behavioral symptoms begin to affect daily life, relationships, or work performance
Psychological distress is persistent and does not improve over time
You have already started psychotherapy and there is a need to assess the possibility of pharmacological treatment
You are going through a crisis phase (such as grief, separation, or trauma) and feel you need medical support
There is a family history of mental health disorders or symptoms that emerge intensely or suddenly
Even in situations of uncertainty, an initial assessment consultation can be an important step toward understanding what you are experiencing.
-
APsychiatry may be indicated for the diagnosis and treatment of:
Generalized anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, or obsessions
Depression, mood changes, apathy, or prolonged lack of motivation
Sleep or eating disorders
Burnout or chronic stress
Personality disorders
Impulsive or self-harming behaviors
Psychotic disorders (such as hallucinations or delusions)
Complicated grief or intense traumatic reactions
Bipolar disorder or manic episodes
Trauma, abuse, or exposure to highly stressful situations

The first appointment lasts 45 minutes and is focused on a comprehensive clinical assessment, including symptoms, personal and family history, and functional impact.
The doctor may recommend or initiate psychiatric medication, always with a clear explanation tailored to your situation
When necessary, care is coordinated with other professionals on the team, such as psychologists
Follow-up appointments last 30 minutes and allow for monitoring progress, adjusting medication, and supporting the clinical process.
You may choose between in-person sessions in Lisbon or online appointments, with the same level of rigor and professional confidentiality.
